Parole and MSR 101

Parole and Mandatory Supervised Release (MSR) are distinct processes in Illinois, but are often referred to interchangeably. Parole is a discretionary release decision made by the Prisoner Review Board (PRB), followed by a mandatory period of supervision. MSR does not refer to a release decision, rather a mandatory period of supervision that someone must serve upon their release from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).
